What To Do When Your Site Security Is Compromised (true story)

Is your site secure?

I thought mine was.

That’s the question I should have been asking myself long before this week.

All the signs were there – even emails directly from Google about it.

But I just didn’t pay attention.

So Sunday night, I get a message from my good friend Claire Pelletreau alerting me to something weird on my site…

Oh no.

Be prepared for a little sassiness in Mama Anne, since I recorded this when it was still fresh and I was still a little overwhelmed by the whole process! But this is real and raw and I’m thinking you’ll remember a time when you felt out of control or unprepared for something like this!

The big moral of this story for me is that even when you're not launching, you still need to keep an eye on the systems running your business.

In this short and sweet episode I share:

  1. What happened to my site
  2. Why it happened – some of it was user error (mine)
  3. The exact steps I took to fix it…and what I’ll be doing moving forward
  4. Why this is so important to you if you are planning to launch

I’d love to know if anything like this has happened to you especially during a launch, what you did to solve it and how you are protecting yourself from it happening again in the future!

Thanks for sharing your rant and your resources! Everyone meltsdown when their site is hacked or down so don’t feel badly. Feel great for helping others out.

I think security & backups are those topics that you don’t seriously consider until it happens. I have heard that Hostgator is not very helpful with hacks and security. I use Siteground and they offer a scan service that checks for malware etc. I also use Updraft Plus to back up my site.

And the Google notices you were receiving … I would have just assumed those were spam!

Sorry you were hacked but at least it was not in the middle of launch etc.

Thank you Kathy for the support and kind words! This is now added to my launch systems to be sure are in place. Also, as I move toward having an onsite shop, I know this security is even more important for potential customers too!
