Today I want to talk about a concept that was recently presented to me and has made a huge impact in how I do everything.
Here's the concept:
How You Do 1 Thing is How You Do Everything…
As soon as I heard the words, I looked around my house, looked at what I was wearing, looked at my nails, looked at those dishes…and wondered okay…everything looks a little bit untidy…does that mean my fitness level is also a little unkempt? Does it mean that other seemingly unrelated areas of my life were untidy too?
Yes, actually it does mean exactly that.
You see, if you have piles of paperwork around you, messy counters, random dusty corners, general mayhem in your environment…ask yourself, “How does that affects my mood?”
If you're anything like me, you might look around and notice these things throughout the day.
If you have any emotional response to the mess, then it's depleting your energy.
If you aren't affected by mess, it's possible you have just numbed yourself to it… or perhaps, it really doesn't bother you!
We've all experienced that feeling of well-being when we come into a tidy room or house. Or…how great we feel going into the hotel room for the first time.
Ohh…nothing complicated, nothing detracting from my mood. Wow, I can really relax here.
So, go let's go back to your normal environments at home or work…
I definitely get a little stir crazy and scattered if there is too much mess around me. I am not a tidy super neat freak. But there are certain hot zones in my house that affect other areas of my life.
For example, if my kitchen's messy, and I'm sitting at the computer staring at it all day, it brings me way down and I'm unlikely to get right on a workout.
Another example is my wallet. Every few weeks I need to go in and tidy up. I file my receipts, throw away things I don't need to keep, line up any cash I have in there, put the coins in the coin compartment. When my wallet is clean, not only do I feel more clear mentally, I also gain some business opportunity or offer, and I definitely get my workout done. Clearing my physical space, also helps me to clear mental clutter.
*I tested that out this week and had a big opportunity land in my lap. So I know this works too!
Now, let's take a non-cleaning example, because quite truthfully, some people aren't nutty about cleaning and that's fine.
Do you rush through your meals, rush to take a shower, rush to do every thing? This is another behavior that might spread into the way you take care of yourself. Try finding activities that require your complete attention and you can't rush through. Becoming a mom, teaching pilates, these roles have taught me so much about patience and about being right there engaged in the process.
Maybe this concept of “the way you do one thing is the way you do everything” sounds far fetched to you, but I challenge you to try it … choose one area that you consider a “hot zone” around your house, at work, in your wallet, in your purse, maybe in your car, maybe in your appearance…and clean it up. By clean it up, I mean take a moment to either physically clean it up or purge items you don't need…
And if you don't have time to do a real deep cleaning, try to become aware of the spaces in your life that are sucking your energy.
All it takes is a little:
To start doing everything in your life with a little more care. And soon, I really think you're going to see that you'll be treating yourself with the care that you deserve.
